IR Training in Switzerland

In Switzerland, interventional radiologists are first trained as radiologists: the path starts with the FMH specialist title in radiology, regulated by the Swiss Institute for Medical Education (SIWF/ISFM). During and after residency, trainees gain experience in interventional radiology in training centres across the country.

For subspecialisation, SSVIR recognises the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR), the European qualification in IR based on the CIRSE curriculum and syllabus. Preparation usually combines a dedicated period of hands-on training in an IR department — often as a fellowship in one of the Swiss IR centres — with courses, congresses and self-study.

A list of interventional radiology fellowship positions in Switzerland will be published on this page.

Getting started

  • Seek exposure to interventional procedures early in residency and discuss your plans with the IR team of your hospital.
  • Attend courses and meetings: the SSVIR programme at the Swiss Congress of Radiology, CIRSE and its educational activities, and national courses accredited by SSVIR.
  • Build a logbook of the procedures you perform and take part in research projects.
  • Join SSVIR as a junior member to stay informed and meet colleagues.

Mentoring & Network

SSVIR Junior gathers residents and young radiologists interested in interventional radiology. Junior membership is open to residents in Switzerland or in the European Union: junior members pay a reduced fee, enjoy all the benefits of the society and can take part in all its meetings, without voting rights at the General Assembly.

A junior representative sits on the SSVIR committee and brings the perspective of trainees into the society's decisions.

Looking for advice on a training position, a fellowship, a research project or EBIR preparation? Get in touch with the junior representative through the contact form: we will be glad to put you in touch with experienced colleagues in Swiss IR centres.

Awards & Initiatives

Every year SSVIR presents two awards at the Swiss Congress of Radiology.

Young Investigator Award

The SSVIR Young Investigator Award recognises outstanding research in interventional radiology by young members of the society. The conditions of participation and the call for applications are announced in the News section.

Junior Games Award

The Junior Games are a team quiz on interventional radiology held during the SSVIR session of the congress — a fun and educational way to learn. The best teams are rewarded immediately after the games.
